BURNING QUESTIONS

Which oil to pick?

Every single bottle of oil we put out has the same formula, same recipe, exact same first 15 ingredients in the same proportion. The scented oils (everything except for Original) come with 1 additional ingredient which make up the scent of the oil. These 1 additional ingredient is either an essential or fragrance oil. The scent of the oil makes up less than 1% of the entire formula.

Only the scent, that one ingredient is different. In terms of how efficient the oil can be and benefits of it, every bottle of oil does the same job! Pick any scent that speaks to you, a scent that you think will give you the ideal oiling experience after a long day!

Can I leave the oil on overnight?

It’s typically not recommended to leave hair oils on overnight mainly because of the chillness of our rooms at night with fans and air conditioning running the whole night. When you’ve applied oil on your scalp and sleep in a cold environment, your chances of catching a cold is very high. You might even wake up running a temperature. But if you’ve tried and tested overnight oiling and suits your lifestyle and wash routine, then go right ahead.

Can I use the oil as a leave-in, post-wash hair serum? Can I use the oil everyday?

It’s not recommend to use the oil on a daily basis. It wasn’t formulated to be an everyday oil. The oil recipe contains coconut oil AND olive oil AND castor oil - that is a very thick formula to be applying everyday on the head. The ideal way to use the pre-wash treatment oil is a few times a week. Soak on hair and then wash off. That being said, many customers use the oil a little bit everyday to kill frizz and keep their hair tamed before they go to school or work. You can apply it daily ONLY IF you think it works for you that way.

What’s the ideal oiling routine?

2-3x a week for about 1-2 hours of soaking time each time you oil. If you’re experiencing a stubborn hair concern (e.g. a new bald spot) and you feel like upping the oiling routine to 4x a week or daily will be far more effective, go right ahead. Just make sure your pores are not getting clogged with the heavy oiling routine.

Oiling more times a week > oiling lesser times a week for very long periods of soaking time

Can I use the same oil on hair and body. Will my hair growth on my body increase?

When used on body, the oil is great for nourishing, moisturising dry patches, skin hydration, lightening scars and marks but not to increase hair growth. Hair density: the number of individual hair strands per square inch on the scalp or skin. What the oil does is push your hair to reach its maximum hair density that you were naturally born with. If you had very little hair from the beginning, that’s the maximum you’d get even if you oil everyday. If you had thick hair and experienced hair loss along the way, the oil can aid in your scalp reaching its maximum hair potential. And this applies to body hair as well. Using the same oil on hair and body does not mean your body hair will increase. If you naturally have very little hair on your body, that’s how it’ll remain. If you’re slightly hairier on your body and you have waxing or IPL sessions scheduled every 4-8 weeks, even if you’re oiling daily, your hair growth will not speed up, nor will your hair grow thicker. You will still be scheduling hair removal sessions at the same interval as before.

Is the hair oil effective?

The hair oils we put out are wonderful at achieving a healthy head of hair for you, but don’t forget that the biggest factors that affect hair health are: diet, water intake, stress level, exercise, sleep, pollution, genes, and only lastly…products. Ensure all the other aspects that largely attribute to good hair (and skin) health are looked after while you embark on this hair oiling journey.

PRODUCT-RELATED FAQS

In this section you will find answers to all if not most questions you have regarding the product, its formulation, the method to use etc.

To heat the oil or not?

Heating the oil is not compulsory. It’s recommended, if you have the time and tools to heat it. Lukewarm oil helps stimulate hair follicles. If you have limited time, skip this step and oil directly from bottle.

What’s the expiry date for the oil?

The oil’s safe for use 4-6 months from date of purchase. However the more telling way is to sniff the oil - a rancid smell means the oil has gone off. The oil is preservative free. We know of customers who’ve kept some of their favourite scented oil bottles for more than 2 years, using a little each time and rotating scents from their collection of our oils, and they have all reported back perfectly clean, fresh oil that works just the same as a bottle of oil that’s 2 weeks’ old. That being said, try not to stock up too many oil bottles (excessive consumerism or over-consumption is not a good look on anyone).

Can I mix the oil with another product?

If the additional product you’d like to mix the oils with is an essential oil (in cases where the oil’s herby smell is too strong for you), feel free to do so. But if you’re looking to add another heavy oil like jojoba oil or sweet almond oil, it’s going to weigh down on your hair a lot more. The oils we make are heavy oils. Try not to tweak the chemistry of the oil too much.

Can I mix Olaplex No.3 to the hair oil?

This mix was tested by the HaircareByMon team, and the results were not impressive. Hair is more weighed down than usual. Use them separately.

How long to keep on hair before washing off?

This totally depends on your availability and lifestyle. Ideally oil and let that soak in your head for about 1-2 hours before washing off. But if you’re strapped for time, oiling and letting it soak for even 20-30 minutes is fine. The aim is to oil more frequently in a week than to oil lesser times and leave it on for too long. Try not to exceed 6 hours of soaking period or overnight oiling as you may catch a cold from the combination of oil-on-scalp + cold room (high fan speed or air conditioning).

Hoarding oils and letting them sit around for months Or Can I bulk buy?

We’re a brand that has been aggressively promoting healthy buying habits and does not encourage a shopping addiction or excessive consumerism. The scented oils that are released monthly might tempt you, but try to only buy what you can oil and clear off within the next 2-3 months. If you’re someone who enjoys toggling between different scented oils and have a scented oil for your mood of the day, like most people do with perfumes, then go right ahead and build your scented oil collection. Just make sure you have a robust oiling schedule that’s regular and unshakeable!

When does expiry date start?

Expiry date starts from the time the oils are brewed and not from the time you receive them. So calculate the time you’ve held on to a bottle + 2 week spent at ours.

CUSTOMER-RELATED FAQS

In this section you will find answers to questions regarding the persons who can use the oil and the criteria required to start on one's oiling journey.

Can kids use the oil?

We have parent-clients who’ve been oiling their kids from as young as 1-month-old. All hair & body oils we brew are kid-friendly. Some scents that we’ve noticed kids love: vanilla and peppermint. Kids seem to love the tingly sensation of minty hair products. You can oil baby’s hair AND body, so don’t skip out on the regular body oiling as well! Oil massage, soak, wash. Repeat weekly.

Can pregnant and breastfeeding women use the oil?

Yes. All ingredients sourced and included in the hair & body oil recipe are pregnant and breastfeeding-women safe. But before you invest in a product, like you would for every other thing, please run the ingredients by your gynae or an expert family member to ensure they’re all ingredients you’re comfortable applying on your scalp and body.

Can alopecia, psoriasis, dermatitis or eczema-diagnosed people use the hair oil?

Is the oil beneficial for a new mum experiencing postpartum hair loss?

You’ve come to the right place. Not only are the oils safe for pregnant-women and new mums’ usage, but they are also extremely beneficial in combatting postpartum hair loss. Like you would with skincare, you’d need to give the hair oils a good amount of time to work on your hair challenges. This will not be an overnight miracle. Give yourself 3-4 weeks to start noticing hair fall reducing, hair strengthening and hair growing. We have gathered unlimited (!!!) fantastic reviews from mums and mums-to-be on how they’ve regrown a full head of strong hair during and after pregnancy. Use without fear!

P.S. Share the oil bottle with your newborn as well. Our oils are safe for baby’s hair AND body oiling from as early as 1 month old.

Can I use the oil if I have an oily scalp?

Pro tip for someone with an incredibly oily scalp is to closely monitor if oiling is making your scalp oilier or not! To do this you’re going to have to start with oiling 2-3 times a week for 2-3 hours each time. Monitor. If it’s too oily even after a wash, reduce the number of times you oil or how long you leave the oil on your scalp for. And monitor again. Keep doing this until you find the right amount of oil to apply, number of times a week, and time to soak it for.

Can the oil be used on coloured and/or bleached hair?

That’s a resounding yes! The oil works perfectly on coloured hair, especially when used regularly like hair mask. Bleaching of the hair makes your hair dry, frizzy, brittle and sometimes makes you lose your natural curl pattern. If you can start oiling your hair as soon as your dye session at the salon, you’d be able to restore all the moisture you’ve lost in the salon. Hair colour will not run out.

Pro tip: after oiling your hair, mix a little purple shampoo + clarifying shampoo to wash your hair out. That way you cut out brassiness in your hair + wash out all the grease from the hair oiling in one wash!

Can the oil be used for male pattern baldness?

Male pattern baldness is one of the most challenging hair issues to combat, mainly because it is mostly genetic and hereditary. When genes are involved, products hardly stand a chance against it. That being said, should you have confidence in Ayurvedic hair oils, and want to give the oils we make a chance, feel free to get a bottle of oil. Our only recommendation to you will be to be very consistent with your oiling routine. Oil 2-3 times a week and don’t falter with this routine.

Can the oils be used on sensitive scalps?

Applying coconut oil is known to be a natural way to treat sensitive scalps. The oils we formulate at HaircareByMon is not only gentle on sensitive scalps, but also nourishes and restores moisture back in the scalp. All oils on our menu are suited for all types of hair and scalps.

Which oil is suitable for men?

All oils are suitable for men, and not just on hair and head, but moustache, beard, eyebrows too (just don’t get any oil in your eye or it’ll sting!)

Your oiling routine will not differ from a lady’s oiling routine - oil 2-3x a week and wash all the grease off before drying and styling.

Things men should take note off that affect hair health negatively: wearing a bike helmet / cap daily, heavy styling products like gel / pomade / hair spray daily.

Which oil is most apt for kids?

All oils on our menu are made with the same base formula, with the only difference being 1 ingredient, which is the scent itself. All oils on our menu are kid-friendly! Pick any scented or unscented oil you think your kid might enjoy using!

What state should hair be in when oiling?

The most ideal condition is when your hair is product-free and air dried. But because we live such hectic lives, as long as your hair is dry, you can oil. Even day 2 or day 3 hair that’s been washed days ago, and has a lot of product in it is fine for oiling. We’d much rather you oil frequently than fret over the state of your hair for oiling.

Do I need to condition my hair if I’ve just oiled?

Depends on the state of your hair once you’ve oiled and washed, and the state of your hair you like it to be. If you like your hair being super silky to the touch, then yes, feel free to condition your hair even on days you’ve oiled it. The oil replaces a hair mask, not a conditioner. But because lots of customers have reported back super silky hair that doesn’t require conditioning, we’ve marketed the product as such. If you feel your hair gets weighed down a lot with the oiling + conditioning method, then skip conditioner.

What’s the best shampoo to use for oiling days?

Recommended: Olaplex clarifying shampoo or Giovanni 50:50 clarifying shampoo

If your current shampoo works perfectly well in removing all the grease from oiling in one wash, continue with your existing product, don’t end up spending more than needed! Only purchase a clarifying shampoo if you’re struggling to get rid of post-oiled grease IN ONE WASH.

Conditioner is optional. Some people’s hair gets moisturised enough after oiling that they might skip conditioner on days they’ve oiled.
